SEO is an often overlooked aspect of digital marketing for renewable energy companies, but offers incredible opportunities for growth. When writing blogs for my clients, one of my standard questions is, “Which keyword do you want to target?” Not infrequently, I get puzzled looks or a dismissive comment, that SEO is not important to them.
Many businesses in the renewable energy space don’t realize that ranking well on search engines can significantly increase visibility, attract potential customers, and position the business as a leader in the industry. SEO often determines how well you are found as a business online.

Why You Should Care
Since many renewable energy companies are focused on selling large-scale solutions to other businesses or governments, there’s a common misconception that SEO is less relevant to their audience. This couldn’t be further from the truth.
Search results are often one of the first touchpoints for potential clients, partners, or stakeholders, whether B2C or B2B. When someone searches for “commercial solar solutions” or “EV charging for workplaces,” they’re looking for trusted companies that can provide these services at scale. If your company doesn’t appear on the first page of search results, you risk losing valuable leads to competitors who have optimized their online presence.

Even if your sales team has made the first contact, the majority of decision-makers will go online to get a sense of who the big players are. There’s a good chance you will lose the bid if they cannot find you on the first page of Google after a few different keyword attempts.
With demand for renewable energy growing rapidly, competition is increasing across the sector. Both established companies and new entrants are vying for visibility, and SEO provides a cost-effective, long-term way to build credibility and generate leads. Unlike paid ads, where visibility ends when the budget runs out, organic traffic from SEO keeps working for your business over time, driving ongoing exposure and helping you remain relevant.
SEO Opportunities You Might Be Overlooking
Despite the rising demand for renewable energy, many high-value keywords related to clean technology and green energy remain underutilized. This gap presents an opportunity for you to increase visibility, demonstrate innovative leadership, and attract more leads through targeted SEO efforts.
Keyword Research: Finding Underused Opportunities
One of the foundational steps in SEO is keyword research. This means identifying and targeting keywords like “solar panel installation,” “wind energy solutions,” or “EV charging stations.” These are broad terms that many businesses have yet to fully optimize for. There are a number of tools out there that can help you do the legwork. I often use MOZ, but there are many more. What you want to aim for, in general terms, are keywords with solid monthly volume and low competition.
For example, the keyword “fleet charging” has a decent monthly volume, but very little competition. Low-hanging fruit if you provide EV charging solutions for fleet vehicles. The same can be said for “commercial solar companies”. In both examples, a well-written blog post will likely land you on page one of google.com.
Long-Tail Keywords: Tapping into Niche Search Queries
While high-traffic, generic keywords like “solar energy” or “wind power” are important, they are often highly competitive. This is where long-tail keywords—more specific phrases that cater to narrower searches—become extremely valuable. For example, keywords like “solar energy for commercial buildings” or “small-scale wind turbines for rural areas” target specific needs and have less competition than broad terms.
Long-tail keywords often signal a higher intent to purchase or engage. A potential customer searching for “commercial solar panel systems with battery storage” likely has a clear idea of what they need, which increases the chances of a sale if they land on your site. In-depth keyword research will uncover these opportunities. You can integrate them into your website content, product descriptions, and blog posts.
Local SEO: Capturing High-Value Regional Traffic
For many renewable energy companies, especially those that provide installation or service-based solutions, local SEO is a powerful and often underused tool. Whether serving the B2B or B2C market, local customers are actively searching for nearby renewable energy providers. For example, people might search for “solar energy installation near me” or “EV charging station services in [city name].”
To tap into this, optimize your Google Business Profile by ensuring accurate business details, updating service areas, and encouraging customer reviews. Positive reviews not only enhance credibility but also improve your chances of appearing in the local top three of search results—a highly coveted position that can drive a significant amount of local traffic.
Backlinks Create Authority Online
Search engines view backlinks—links from other websites pointing to your site—as votes of confidence in your content. Links from highly respected, relevant websites such as green energy publications, academic institutions, government programs, or well-known clean energy companies can significantly improve your website’s credibility in the eyes of search engines.
Here are a few strategies you could apply:
- Reach out to industry blogs and publications, offering to write guest articles on topics relevant to renewable energy trends, technologies, and innovations.
- Partnerships with Government and Educational Institutions: Collaborate on clean energy initiatives or studies and request backlinks from reports, studies, or press releases on government and academic websites.
- If your company is involved in high-impact projects (e.g., installing a large-scale solar farm or contributing to new renewable energy regulations), publishing press releases can help you gain valuable backlinks from media outlets.
- Another powerful method to acquire backlinks is through publishing original research or case studies. If your company has unique data, performance metrics, or success stories about renewable energy efficiency or technology adoption, these can be turned into in-depth case studies that others in the industry may link to. Case studies not only provide authoritative content but also demonstrate your company’s leadership and expertise.
Building Trust with High-Quality Content
Beyond backlinks, search engines also favour websites that consistently produce high-quality, authoritative content. Renewable energy companies can benefit by developing resources that position them as thought leaders in the industry. This can include:
- Whitepapers on emerging clean energy technologies.
- Blog posts that explore how businesses can improve energy efficiency through renewable solutions.
- Educational content such as videos or infographics explaining complex renewable energy topics in simple terms.
One of my clients targeted “smart RV technology” with this article here. We achieved position 6 on the first page of google.com, after only a few weeks. The article is bringing the client consistent and highly specific traffic, helping them establish their brand as an industry leader in RV solar solutions.
Don’t make the mistake of underestimating the value of SEO for your business. Many renewable energy companies are still in the early stages, but chances are the leader in your niche is already deploying strategic SEO and reaping the rewards of targeted online traffic. The market rarely rewards those who sit and wait.
